Cordless phones work based on radio waves. The sound is first converted into radio particles and then transmitted over the network. At the receiving end, the incoming radio waves are again decoded into sound using decoders and this makes them audible.

When the base station receives a call, incoming electric signal is converted into radio signals and transferred to the handset.
